This book is written from the perspective of a 15-year old boy in Colombia, South America, during the early 1980’s. As such, this book would be considered young adult fiction and a coming-of-age story. The book reflects the realistic language and experiences of a typical Colombian teenager, during a very difficult time of our country’s history. Strong and irreverent at times, the language is not meant to shock the reader, but to show Joe’s state of mind during a time of profound grief. Some themes the reader will come across are: Suicide, sexual exploitation, faith struggles, violence, and substance abuse.
